How do you choose the right career when the possibilities seem endless? For engineers, the choices range from software development to control systems, AI, and project management. But beyond picking the right field,

success comes from understanding how your skills and mindset align with opportunities.

On MoloMolo African Tech Stories podcast, we recently had an insightful conversation with Enrique Maldonado, a flight control laws engineer at Lilium. His journey offers a powerful lesson in making intentional career decisions.

Childhood Curiosity and Career Exploration

Enrique’s path to engineering was shaped early on. Growing up in Colombia, his family owned a library, exposing him to technology like barcode scanners and early computers. His curiosity about how things worked led him to explore both technical and artistic fields, from programming and math to drama and music.

While he initially considered a career in the arts, strong support from his parents and teachers encouraged him to pursue engineering. He excelled in physics and math, and a high score on Colombia’s national exam (ICFES) opened doors to top universities.

From Electronics to Flight Control

Enrique began studying electronic engineering in Bogotá, but an opportunity to study in France shifted his focus to aerospace. After mastering French in just six months, he earned a double degree in Electrical Engineering and Automation in Toulouse, home to aerospace giants like Airbus.

His interest in control systems led him to an internship at Airbus, where he applied his knowledge of automation to flight control systems. This hands-on experience solidified his passion for aircraft and autonomous flight, leading him to a career in the aviation industry.

Key Takeaways for Career Growth

  1. Your Career is a Journey, Not a Single Decision – Enrique didn’t have everything figured out from the start. Instead, he focused on his strengths and explored opportunities as they came.

  2. Take Calculated Risks – Moving to a new country or industry can be intimidating, but the real fear should be not trying at all.

  3. Follow Your Core Interests – Engineering is broad, but Enrique found his niche in automation and control systems by staying open to learning.

Mastering Technical Communication

One of the biggest challenges for engineers is not just solving technical problems but communicating solutions effectively. If you’re looking to advance your career and stand out in the tech industry, mastering technical communication is key.
